On a night full of intensity Georgetown University faced off against Rutgers University following their draw at home to UNC Chapel Hill. The Georgetown supporters showed out again this match with students crowded from shoulder to shoulder across the entire endline on Rutgers half.
The result ended 2-1 in favor of Georgetown University, but outstanding performances from both goalkeepers prevented countless scoring opportunities from finding the back of the net. The opening 20 minutes were controlled by Georgetown with multiple chances to take the lead including a rebounded finish from Mitch Baker that was ruled offsides.
After some resilient attacking pressure from Georgetown along with a student driven atmosphere, the opener was found through senior Matthew Van Horn of Georgetown who kept the ball at his feet through four defenders and ripped a left footed shot near post to put Georgetown up 1-0.
Following halftime Georgetown picked up right where the left off with Van Horn forcing another save from Rutgers keeper Rafael Ponce de Leon in the first few minutes of the second half. Van Horn, who scored for the opener, continued to show out as one of the star performers in this game.
From then on chances followed from both sides but neither Georgetown nor Rutgers could find the back of the net until Mitch Baker received the ball in the attacking third and found Zayan Ahmed who slips the ball past the keeper to take the score to 2-0. The Georgetown supporters rattled the boards behind the goal as the players celebrate their two-games unbeaten to open the season.
With 20 seconds left Rutgers win themselves a corner and with the last chance of the game Rutgers defender Charlie Kitch heads home to close the gap to 2-1. But the goal is not enough for Rutgers as the Georgetown players kick it off to bring the game to a close.
A huge win for Georgetown Men’s Soccer who look ahead to their two games, Delaware and Duke.
